Life was anything but predicable-
The wanderers find a splendid windfall on the side of the road, a battered old canvas tent.
A week later, Penny was in hospital with a life threatening infection. The boys stare bleakly at a future as orphans. Fortunately, they now had a tent to live in while Penny mended.
Back on The Alex once more, Del’s mischievous antics put him under a road grader. His injuries require a trip to the Cloncurry Hospital for treatment. The only aircraft on hand for the job is the Governor General’s personal RAAF plane.
Sacked for what was termed-disrespect to the Queen – Penny finds a job as second cook at the Mount Isa Mines.
Penny was determined to build a real home even if she had to do it one block at a time. The company offered affordable land and Penny bought her own plot and set up the tent.
With the help of neighbours and co-workers, she and the boys laid the foundation for a modest house. Each payday Penny bought blocks, one trunk load at a time. On free days, she laid the blocks while the boys mixed mortar.
The day finally came when a shiny tin roof was tacked in place. That called for a minor celebration. Right in the middle of dinner, a Willy-Willy whirled by and neatly folded the new roof in half. But even a playful tornado couldn’t dampen their spirits. When the house was done they were off again down the track for more new adventures.
Another heartwarming read with plenty of chuckles.

I Would recommend this book It is an easy read about Australian country life in the 1950's and the hardships incurred.The strength of character and determination of the main characters is a timeless example of how to lead a fulfilling life.A lesson often not learnt today.Product details

Definitely a worthwhile read for those who like something different.
Reads like a first hand account of a rollicking adventure.
